The era of steam power initiated the
most intense timber harvesting ever seen in the Adirondack forest. Although the harvesting
of timber accessible for river drives had been well established for decades, by the
mid-nineteenth century the seemingly endless supply of trees close enough to move by water
had become larely thinned out. Vast areas remained, but they were out of reach of the
technology of the time; mechanization had yet to come to the woods.
